Joyce Oryem was dragged out of her house at midnight, wearing nothing but her panties, and made to watch as her father was beheaded by the Lord’s Resistance Army. Alone, and with children, Joyce struggled to keep her family fed and safe. Now that peace has returned to Gulu, Joyce is being evicted and sent back to the village that she risked her life to escape.

Amy Gillespie, working with GDPU in Gulu, Uganda, explains the importance of sign language for hearing impaired students. Only about 2% of the deaf community in this area are able to graduate because there is no system in place to help them learn. Because there are very few teachers who are able to teach in basic sign language, many students who are hearing impaired struggle to learn and often drop out of school. Another issue is that learning sign language takes time and money, as well as dedication for both deaf students and interpreters. GDPU tries to help the hearing impaired learn skills so that they can work and integrate into their community, but something needs to be done early on to provide disabled students a quality education.
