Kathmandu, Nepal: More than 1,400 people packed Kathmandu’s National Academy Hall on June 13 to watch the premiere of a 25-part television series produced by the Jagaran Media Center.

Titled Dalan, the series is a fictional history that follows three generations of a Dalit family. Beginning with the banishment of a high-caste Brahmin man and lower-caste Dalit woman from their village for having an illicit love affair, Dalan depicts the sufferings that they, their children, and their grandchildren face as a result of caste-based discrimination and social exclusion.Although caste discrimination was outlawed in Nepal in 1952, Dalit still face widespread abuse in many areas of the country.

The series was financed through grants from the European Union. The first episode aired on Nepal Television on June 15, and the series will continue to air at 8:40 p.m. on Sundays for one year.
