January 23, 2008, Lima, Peru: The Peruvian Forensic Anthropology Team (EPAF) and the National Coordinator of Human Rights (CNDDHH) have published the book about forced disappearances in Peru and the work of forensic teams in exposing human rights violations. The book is titled “Forced Disappearance in Peru, The Contribution of Forensic Anthropology Investigation in Obtaining Evidence and the Construction of a Humanitarian Umbrella.”

EPAF is a partner of The Advocacy Project that works to identify the remains of people killed during Peru’s 20-year internal conflict.

The book tackles the issue of the disappeared from EPAF’s position as forensic scientists, and discusses how forensic anthropology can help to solve criminal cases and expose human rights violations through identification of victims. The book focuses on three key cases worked by EPAF: Caso Chuschi, Caso Bernabe Baldeon, and the Caso La Cantuta.

EPAF hopes the book will help the campaign in Peru to ratify the International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearances. So far, seven countries, including Argentina, Albania, Bolivia, France, Honduras, Mexico and Senegal, have ratified the convention.

EPAF also hopes to contribute to the formation of a humanitarian umbrella for the search of the missing – one that does not depend on the political agendas of governments and that prioritizes the direct participation of the affected. In Peru, 25 years after the internal conflict, approximately 15,000 people are still missing.
