Building Accessible Toilets in Northern Uganda
The Gulu Disabled Persons Union (GDPU) is seeking $2,200 to complete work on a public toilet at the Gulu Bus Park, that will serve people with disability. Gulu was ravaged by the LRA rebellion and has one of the highest levels of disability in the country. Scandalously, however, there is only one accessible toilet in the district – and that is at the GDPU itself.
The alarm was raised in 2011 by AP Peace Fellow Rebecca Sherpelz in 2011 in her graphic blog, When nature calls and society hangs up: “The toilet. The latrine. The bathroom. The washroom. The WC. The commode. The john. No matter what you call it and no matter where you are, the fact of the matter is, you use it. Consider how many trips you make to the restroom each day. At least two or three? Now shift your imagination to Gulu and the life of a wheelchair-user. It’s the middle of the day. You’re busy at work and it’s time for a “short call.” Out the door and down the hall, right? Not quite. Imagine if that most simple and essential of tasks was interrupted by any number of obstacles: steps, narrow doors, ditches, carelessly-placed items…”.
Dane Macri, who followed Rebecca as a Peace Fellow in 2012, also blogged about the sanitation crisis facing people with disability. Dane worked with GDPU and Handicap International, and together they began construction of an accessible toilet at the Central Bus Station. This year’s Fellow, John Steies, has picked up where they left off. Once the toilet is built, the GDPU will monitor its use and maintenance. GDPU is also identifying more sites. This is a great cause. Please donate below.
