January 23, 2008, Washington, DC: The Advocacy Project (AP) is co-hosting a discussion at Georgetown University Tuesday, January 27 focusing on girls’ education in Afghanistan.
Sadiqa Basiri, who founded the Oruj Learning Center, an AP partner organization in Afghanistan, will speak at the event.
In 2002, Ms Basiri organized classes for 36 girls in her native village of Godah, Wardak province in an abandoned mosque. By 2008, her organization, the Oruj Learning Center, was supporting the education of over 2,700 girls in six schools.
On Tuesday, Ms Basiri will discuss her community-based approach to girls’ education, at a time of renewed commitment from the new US Administration but growing insecurity in the Afghan countryside.
The event will be held from 1 p.m to 2:15 p.m. in Room 662 of the Intercultural Center at Georgetown. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP here.
The event is being co-hosted by the Georgetown Human Rights Forum and the Institute for the Study of International Migration (ISIM).
