Tea Towels from War Survivors in Uganda

A holiday gift to lift the spirits

Nighty Achieng made the design for the Red butterfly tea towel, shown left. Nighty was kidnapped by rebels at the age of 11 and held captive for five years. She says that stitching has brought her closer to friends and offers a badly-need source of income.

The Advocacy Project (AP) is pleased to offer ten tea towels for sale over the holiday season. Each towel was designed by a fiber artist who survived gender-based violence by rebels in Northern Uganda. The artists are members of Women in Action for Women (WAW), an AP partner since 2021.

The towels are available through the online store Southern Stitchers at $15 per towel or in packs of ten ($125) and five ($70). Shipping is free. All profits will go to the artists. Click on the images below to order a towel and read the artist’s profile. Click here for WAW’s stories of captivity, told through embroidery.

All towels are sized 27″ x 27″ made from 100% cotton and highly absorbent. The design holds after washing
