December 9, 2008, Washington, DC: In an op-ed piece published in the Christian Science Monitor today, Iain Guest, Executive Director of The Advocacy Project (AP), called on the President-elect to renew the United States commitment to human rights and join the United Nations’ Human Rights Council.
Mr Guest wrote that the UN’s human rights program has been badly weakened by an ill-advised reform and by America’s absence from the Council – which President Bush snubbed when it was formed in 2006.
He urged President-elect Obama and his nominee for UN Ambassador, Susan Rice, to appoint a delegate with a proven commitment to human rights.
