Digital Storytelling Project Highlighted by UNICEF

17 Oct

October 17, 2008, Nairobi, Kenya: A pioneering blogging project started by AP Peace Fellow Kristina Rosinsky is being featured in the October issue of UNICEF’s Media Magic Digest.

The Digital Storytelling Project, started this past summer by Ms Rosinsky in partnership with the Undugu Society of Kenya (USK), trained 17 at-risk Kenyan youths to express themselves over the Internet through blogs and photographs.

The project has allowed the students to speak up about issues in their lives, including
environmental degradation, drug abuse, life on the streets, poverty and post-election violence. It seeks, through their own words, to change negative stereotypes about these children and advocate for the issues they raise.

Ms Rosinsky is currently training two exceptional students, Joseph Gachira, 18, and Martin Ndung’u, 21, to lead the program in 2009 after she returns to the United States.

UNICEF’s Media Magic Digest is a quarterly online multimedia newsletter which showcases media projects by, with and for children.
