Details of Sanjita’s Business Proposal

01 Jul

Apparently I’ve unintentionally caused a lot of intrigue about the “business proposal” from Sanjita I mentioned in my last blog.

To answer the many questions I received, very roughly, her proposal is for us to start an import/export business – creating a market for her to sell her goods in the USA and creating a chance for us to sport the beautiful wares produced in her factory. There are a whole range of possibilities w/ that realm – they make items we designed in the US, or we buy wholesale the designs they have, through placing customized orders, the list goes on…

Any one have an interest or any idea how we would get this started?

We have had several women who have attended our Women Leaders for the World program who are involved in import businesses.

The most successful is Ruth DeGolia who runs Mercado Global (see http://www.mercadoglobal.org/). They are a substantial organization with offices in Guatemala and Hartford, Conn.

The other one that is run by an American now resident in Turkey is Citara’s (see http://www.citaras.com/Citaras_2007_001/index.html). It is still in its embryonic stages.

There are other, already up and running, merchandising channels such as Novica.

Depending on what you are out to accomplish, I would recommend a partnering strategy or at least being mentored by someone who has already pioneered this approach.
