Youth and HIV/AIDS in Africa (2001-2002)During 2001 and 2002, AP helped two African students – Lydia Bosire and Leo Metcalf – to develop a network of young AIDS activists in Africa, named Youth Against AIDS (YAA). Their goal was to influence two special sessions of the UN General Assembly, on HIV/AIDS (June 2001) and Children (May 2002). AP provided funding for Lydia and Leo to visit network members in South Africa, Botswana, Senegal, Kenya, Nigeria and Uganda, and profiled their work in a 9-part series of our newsletter On the Record. Adam Frankel also contributed issues. The series attracted more online comments and feedback than any other series before or after, and helped to give young Africans a strong voice at the 2001 conference, which called for young Africans to be involved and informed abut HIV/AIDS. By May 2002, YAA was a respected part of a larger movement that attended the UN conference on children. AP produced a printed newspaper for this meeting which will shortly be posted on this page. |
