Human Rights Defenders (1998)In December 1998, The Advocacy Project was invited to cover the World Summit of Human Rights Defenders in Paris, France. The meeting was organized by the French branches of four leading human rights organizations – Amnesty International, the International Federation of Human Rights, France Liberties, and the Mouvement International Quart Monde – and brought together over 300 human rights campaigners on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Their specific goal was to draw up an action plan to ensure greater protection for those at the forefront of the campaign for HR. But they also hoped that the meeting would also shift the focus of the international human rights system from governments to civil society. Using the format that had worked well at the Rome Conference (June) and the annual meeting of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (October) AP put together a team and produced several issues of the newsletter On the Record. These were emailed out to around 2,000 human rights organizations and posted on the AP and partner websites.
