Akram Rikhawi, a Palestinian political prisoner from the Gaza Strip, has been fasting for 99 days prior to the start of Ramadan. Rikhawi was arrested on June 7th2004 and began his hunger strike onApril 12th in protest of Israeli Prison Service’s neglect of his serious medical condition. Addameer, a prisoner’s rights group, reports that Rikhawi suffers from asthma, immune deficiency and diabetes, in addition to the complications resulting from his prolonged detainment and fast. He has recently lost feeling in his left hand and leg. Independent doctors, from Physicians for Human Rights Israel, report that Rikhawi is at immediate risk of death.
Rikhawi’s case typifies that of many other Palestinians held under ‘administrative detention’, which ultimately amounts to indefinite imprisonment without trial – a breach of the Fourth Geneva Convention under international law.
