I am surprised that the fons are progressive and willing to change their traditions. The Western view of tribal leaders is that they strictly adhere to tradition, even if that means their people would suffer. Yet here in the US we have leaders that believe in static ideas and balk at the thought of change. These strict Constitutionalists don't seem to realize that society is ever changing, and our laws and traditions must be flexible enough to adapt to that changing society. Justice Scalia could learn something from the fons of Cameroon. Do the fons have legal authority in Cameroon? Are they recognized by the outside world as legally legitimate leaders or as more traditional rulers?

Very persuasive evidence of the importance to reach out to all the stakeholders in a community if you pursue the ambitious goal of changing deeply rooted cultural norms. I am impressed that the fons were so open with you, and progressive in their embrace of NFF's project. Have fun and be safe!

Reading your and Johanna's blogs has been such an exciting activity for me! You truly bring to life the work that the women of AMA and UCOMAS are doing, and as silly as this may sound, I feel like I am in Cameroon with you when you write about your experiences there.

I hope you had a good workshop experience this past week and look forward to your future postings!

Thanks so much for the comment! And you are absolutely right about the perview of UCOMAS' objectives. We have already started exploring options for future funders and are hoping to leave UCOMAS with a good start on some grant proposals. Really great advice, thanks again.

Very good analysis. It's all about people, isn't it? How do CBOs retain really good people, like Erick and Annik? Anyway, you're giving us a very good sense of the challenge - which is the first step towards doing something useful about it. Start thinking about how you can promote them on return to the US. Also, this blog suggests that UCOMAS is as much about the environment and women's rights as marketing... That might open new funding streams...

Rally good blog. Gives a great sense of athmosphere and makes a very strong point: that women are not represented in the decision-making, even when they do the heavy lifting.
