Rio Negro Massacres: Report on Multilateral Financial Institution Accountability (pdf)

This report reviews conflicting claims of World Bank accountability for human rights violations that occurred in relation to the Chixoy dam project. Prepared by: The Working Group on Multilateral Institution Accountability Graduate Policy Workshop: Human Rights and Non-State Actors, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University.

Rights Action (formerly Guatemala Partners) raises funds for community development, humanitarian relief & human rights projects in Southern Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean. We educate and advocate in the US & Canada about international development and human rights issues.

The Washington-based Ecumenical Program on Central America and the Caribbean (EPICA), has supported the Rio Negro campaign for many years. EPICA provided funding for the Rio Negro survivors to erect a monument to the 1982 massacres.

The Guatemala Solidarity Network (GSN) is committed to working for change in Guatemala, including demilitarization, just distribution of land and resources and full respect for human rights. We also support the full participation of all sectors of Guatemalan society in the political process, including the indigenous majority, women, peasants, trade unionists and displaced people. We work in partnership with organisations in the UK and Guatemala who share these aims. Currently looking for human rights accompaniers from the United Kingdom to go to Guatemala to accompany individual witnesses and communities involved in testifying against former military regimes. The Guatemala Human Rights Commission/USA is a nonprofit, humanitarian organization founded in 1982 to monitor, document and report on the human rights situation in Guatemala. GHRC/USA also promotes advocacy for and aid to victims of human rights violations.

The Guatemala Scholars Network is an organization of over 300 academics and professionals whose major research field is Guatemala. This homepage is intended to foster communication among scholars; to share information about the situation in Guatemala.

WITNESS is a project of the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights. It helps local human rights activists, including the Rio Negro survivors, by giving them video cameras and field training.

The International Rivers Network (IRN) supports local communities working to protect their rivers and watersheds and has used Chixoy as a case study of the damage caused by dams. IRN has campaigned strongly for the Rio Negro survivors.

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) is a public interest, not-for-profit environmental law firm founded in 1989 to strengthen international and comparative environmental law and policy around the world. Based in Washington DC.

The Center for Legal Ation for Human Rights, based in Guatemala City, analyzes the struggle for justice in Guatemala and assists grassroots efforts in many parts of the country. CALDH 's legal department has been active on behalf of the Rio Negro survivors.

The Inter-American Development Bank, the oldest and largest regional multilateral development institution, was established in December of 1959 to help accelerate economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
