Confederation of the Nationalities Indigenous to the Amazon of Ecuador
CONFENIAE is an umbrella organization for all indigenous communities located in the Ecuadorian Amazon, and is a major component of CONAIE, Ecuador’s nation-wide indigenous confederation. Formed in 1980, CONFENIAE comprises 13 federations, and is aligned with similar confederations in Venezuela and Brazil.
The main objectives of CONFENIAE are the defense and legal titling of indigenous territories, as well as the preservation of the environment of the Amazon. CONFENIAE promotes the cultural and economic development of indigenous communities. The organization constituted the Indigenous Parliament of the Ecuadorian Amazon in 1993, as a means of strengthening unity among the Amazonian indigenous communities.
