Katmandu Protests: 9/20/05

Teachers and Female Activists Demand Democracy in Nepal

By the Collective Campaign for Peace

20 September 2005, Katmandu
- Pro-democracy activists from the Nepal Teachers Association have held a protest calling for multi-party rule. The protest was started at Trichandra College, Katmandu. The college itself is situated within the prohibitory zone. Teachers covered their mouths with black ribbon, symbolizing the restrictions of speech and restrictions on intellectual freedom. During this peaceful demonstration, police intervened and arrested many teachers.

At the same time, the sister organizations of seven political parties' alliance continued massive protests against the royal regime. They demanded the dismissal of the present unconstitutional and illegitimate government. Women demonstrators entered the prohibitory zone from Dillibazar to Bagbazar. Female police forces was unable to stop them entering prohibitory zone, so male police forces stepped in arrested some protesters near Ratna Park.

Some students were arrested and a few injured by police batons. The area of Dilli Bazar and Bagbazar remains tense today.

COCAP Human Rights Observers are on the street to monitor the human rights situation since the protests started. Observers have been deliberately mistreated by police several times. A COCAP Human Rights Observer, Dhyan Bir Rai, was pushed three times by the assistant sub-inspector while taking the names of arrested demonstrators today.
