Katmandu Protests: 9/16/05

Students Demand Democracy, Fair Housing in Nepal

Katmandu, 15 September 2005- Tri Chandra College remained tensed today during student agitation demanding for democracy. Five students were injured during the scuffle with police force. About five rounds of tear gas shells were fired to control the protestors.

Today 19 students were arrested from Tribhuwan University (TU), Kirtipur. The students have been detained in Kalimati ward police station, Katmandu after they were demonstrating in front of the Vice Chancellor's office against the newly imposed rules concerning student hostel. After the Royal coup in Feb 1, politically affiliated students had been evacuated from student hostels by the university authority. TU student hostels have been a shelter for students affiliated to various student unions. Therefore, students have been under hunger strike for the past one month to protest this action by the university authority.
