Thousands Arrested in Katmandu Protests

By the Collective Campaign for Peace

Katmandu, September 13, 2005
- Protests continued by an alliance of seven political parties today in the heart of Katmandu city. More than 500 pro-democracy political activists, including senior party leaders, were arrested by riot police force. They are currently being detained at the Exhibition Hall and Mahendra Police Club, Bhrikuti Mandap. Bagbazaar, Old Bus Park and Bhotahiti areas remain tense today. In Padma Kanya Campus, Bagbazar, COCAP human rights observers intervened when the police force were throwing stones at protesting female students inside the college premises.

During arrest of students from Padma Kanya (Girls) College, Katmandu, female police officers were dragging female students forcefully towards police vehicles. A COCAP Human Rights Observer Ms Devika Bhattarai intervened, asking the officers to stop their forceful actions, and was subsequently attacked by several officers. As a consequence, all human rights observers and journalists protested against police behavior.

Police repression against journalists has continued. Tilak Mahat, reporter, Lumbini Daily and Rupandehi F.M acquired serious head injuries after being attacked by police.
