Police Repression Against Political Leaders and Activists

September 5, 2005, Kathmandu
An alliance of seven political parties in Nepal organized a protests and demonstration in Bhotahiti, New Road and Basantapur districts, in Kathmandu, demanding democracy. In a peaceful attempt to cross zones banning protests, police physically assaulted hundreds of pro-democracy political leaders and activists, and arrested scores of others. Dozens received injuries during the clash. Police also open fired rounds of tear gas shells to suppress the demonstration. Some were helped and taken to nearby hospitals by human rights observers of COCAP. During the scuffle police also assaulted journalists. Suman Malla, chief reporter from Pahad Weekly and Shyatram Parajuli, journalist, Saptahik Awaj, camera man from Nepal 1 TV channel were targeted by police aggression.
