A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Kosovo – Civil Society Before and After the 1999 War

AP staffers visited Kosovo in 1999 and 2000 to produce a series of reports on Kosovar civil society. These reports have been reformatted for these pages into the following:

a) A series of On the Record  The Birth and Rebirth of Civil Society in Kosovo. This was written in 1999 by Peter Lippman and Teresa Crawford, who both visited Kosovo before the war, and looks at the evolution of civil society in Kosovo during this tumultuous period.

b) A series of On the Record Rebuilding After the War. This written series of OTR was written in June 2000 by Iain Guest, and examines the key challenges facing Kosovar civil society following the war - not least the presence of a suffocating international administration.

c)  Profiles of civil society leaders. This illustrated series of profiles was written by Iain Guest, Peter Lippman and Teresa Crawford and complements the previous two series.

This intensive involvement by AP with Kosovar civil society led to a strong partnership between AP and the Kosova Women’s Network (KWN)dvd for sale. AP has sent several Peace Fellows to work with KWN.
