Background on the Khmer Rouge

Between 1975 and 1979, up to three million Cambodians died under the rule of the Khmer Rouge. This extreme communist regime closed schools and hospitals, abolished private property and banking, banned religion and forced the entire population to work on collective farms in the countryside. The result of this forced labor was mass death due to starvation, illness and exhaustion. The Khmer Rouge even went as far as killing educated people and other groups that they perceived as a threat to their rule. The overriding goal was to turn Cambodia into a classless society by turning everyone into a rural agricultural laborer.

Twenty-five years after these atrocities, the Cambodian government may be on the brink of finally calling the killers to account - after a great deal of pressure from the international community. It is here that On the Record - Cambodia begins.
