Lucas Wolf and Survivor Corps in Ethiopia

Lucas Wolf, is currently a master’s student at the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  Since arriving in Buenos Aires in February of 2007, Lucas has been immersed in the Master’s program in International Relations and Peace and Conflict Studies as a Rotary World Peace Scholar.

Prior to arrival in Buenos Aires, Lucas served two years as a youth development volunteer with the Peace Corps in el pueblo Villa de San Francisca, about two hours outside of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.  During his Peace Corps experience, Lucas developed a keen sense of the challenges facing rural youth development and the overall health and education obstacles in highly indebted countries struggling with the balancing game of global development such as Honduras.

After two years in Villa de San Francisco it was time to put the backpack on and travel through Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia, Venezuela, Brasil and Uruguay for five months before crossing the Río de la Plata and arriving in Buenos Aires.  Over the course of the trip, he solidified his comprehension and deep love for Latin America, in many ways allowing his academic life in Buenos Aires to forge a bridge to new continents, cultures and countries.

Last year, two academic courses, Global Ethics and International Law, provided the opportunity for the students at la Universidad del Salvador to reach out beyond Latin America for their case studies.  Following up on a combination of intensive Portuguese studies and a growing interest in the global landmine crisis, Lucas began researching the post conflict realities facing Mozambique and Angola and the African continent as a whole.  Thus, when the AP position in Addis Ababa with Survivor Corps (formerly the Landmine Survivors Network) opened up, he immediately jumped at the chance to participate in a project that combines advocacy for post conflict survivors and landmine/remnants of war awareness in Africa.  Although the Horn of Africa is a long ways from the Portuguese speaking countries, Lucas is looking forward to immersing himself on all things Ethiopia, and working with Survivor Corps to enhance their survivor outreach programs and their overall advocacy goals through sports activities, radio programs, networking and collaborating with information and communication technology.
