Prijedor – An Unrecognized Genocide

On the day of July 23, 2008 in Prijedor, yet another burial ceremony was held for murdered Bosnians. According to data at the Research and Documentation Center (Sarajevo), in the city of Prijedor, some 5,200 Bosnians and Croatians were killed or disappeared during the war. In the whole region, some 14,000 people were killed or are missing. Along with Srebrenica and Sarajevo, this constitutes one of the largest crimes committed in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In this region, Serbian military formations created concentration camps for Bosnians and Croatians: Omarska, Keraterm, Trnopolje, where people were beaten, tortured in various ways, and the women were raped.

On this occasion, activists from the Network of Women in Black Serbia attended the commemoration and paid their respects to the innocent victims. The journey to Prijedor presents a continuation of our politics of visiting the places where crimes were committed in our name. This is a politics of respecting the dignity of victims, standing in solidarity with them, recognizing the crimes committed in our name, and asking forgiveness.

Women in Black brought with them a wreath, on which was written “With Compassion and Solidarity –Women in Black Network Serbia.”

FIND A PARTNER

The Advocacy Project develops partnerships with advocates on the frontline and with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In so doing, we take our cue from partners and tailor any support to their needs.
