A Voice For the Voiceless
The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

Simran Sachdev and Women in Black Serbia
New York University
Simran Sachdev is a 2009 Peace Fellow that will be working with the Women in Black Network from Serbia. She will be contributing to their mission of nonviolent resistance to militarism, war, sexism and nationalism through ICT support and outreach. Women in Black promotes respect across cultures, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations and ideologies, and instigates the active participation of women in the peace process.
Simran has a strong passion for promoting human rights for all individuals around the world. She is particularly a strong advocate of women’s rights and is looking forward to expressing her enthusiasm for these rights by working with Women in Black. Simran is currently pursuing her Master’s Degree from New York University in Global Affairs with a concentration in Human Rights and Humanitarian Assistance. She went to New York University as an undergrad as well and earned a degree in Communication Studies with a specialization in Mass Media (magna cum laude) and a minor in Psychology. Before starting her Master’s Program she worked in Online Marketing for over three years, which she trusts will bring expertise to her role as an advocate at Women in Black.
Simran has a vision for a perfect world in which people are inspired and brought to action for the needs of others, rather than by the needs of their own. While she realizes that our world is far from this vision, she believes that there is hope for a better future for all of us. She hopes to contribute to a brighter tomorrow by playing an active role in the human rights arena. Women in Black will be her first mission in pursuit of this goal.
