A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Rangineh Azimzadeh and the Democracy Workers Rights Center (DWRC)

Monterey Institute of International Studies

Rangineh graduated cum laude from Portland State University with her undergraduate degree in Communications Studies. Immediately following graduation, Rangineh went abroad to Nicosia, Cyprus where she studied International Mediation and Conflict Resolution. During her time in Cyprus, she studied and participated in real-time simulations around several of the key conflicts currently taking place in the Middle East with a specific emphasis on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.  She has also lived and studied abroad in Iran and Italy and was a fellow for the Institute for International Public Policy from 2003-2007.

Prior to attending graduate school, Rangineh worked for a private consulting company for two years which provided services that work toward organizational change, personal transformation and social justice. She also attended the Summer Intensive Language Program at Middlebury College where she studied Arabic before beginning her graduate program. Currently, Rangineh is a graduate student at the Monterey Institute of International Studies where she is studying International Conflict Resolution and Negotiation. Most recently, she participated in a 3 week intensive winter practicum in Cambodia examining the challenges to peacebuilding in a post-conflict society.

Rangineh is committed to long-term peacebuilding through the use of sustainable measures including advocacy, empowerment of the local communities as well as track I and II diplomacy. In her spare time, Rangineh enjoys participating as an active Board member for World Pulse, an organization that utilizes multimedia to provide women around the world with a platform where they are able to share their voice and tell their stories in their own words. In her leisure time, Rangineh enjoys spending time with family, friends and traveling.
