Karie Cross and BASE
University of Maryland
Karie Cross will serve as a Peace Fellow for the Advocacy Project in Tulsipur, Nepal, during the summer of 2010. She will be working with the Backward Society Education (BASE) community-based organization to raise awareness about education and bonded labor issues among the Tharu people. Karie will center her efforts around promoting the Child Friendly Village campaign, as she helps to ensure universal access to education for children in rural Nepal.
Karie is working on a Masters of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, with a specialization in International Development. Before moving to the Washington, DC area, she studied English and political science at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, where she graduated with honors. In the past, Karie has volunteered for political campaigns, interned in Governor Mike Beebe's communications office, and served as a teaching assistant at the University of Maryland. Her research interests include gender equity, development ethics, and sustainable development.
