A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Karie Cross and BASE

University of Maryland

Karie Cross will serve as a Peace Fellow for the Advocacy Project in Tulsipur, Nepal, during the summer of 2010. She will be working with the Backward Society Education (BASE) community-based organization to raise awareness about education and bonded labor issues among the Tharu people. Karie will center her efforts around promoting the Child Friendly Village campaign, as she helps to ensure universal access to education for children in rural Nepal.

Karie is working on a Masters of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, with a specialization in International Development.  Before moving to the Washington, DC area, she studied English and political science at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas, where she graduated with honors.  In the past, Karie has volunteered for political campaigns, interned in Governor Mike Beebe's communications office, and served as a teaching assistant at the University of Maryland.  Her research interests include gender equity, development ethics, and sustainable development.
