A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Background

The Jagaran Media Center was estabilished by a group of Dalit reporters in 2000. In the years since, JMC has used several different tools to cover Dalit issues. The latest is Radio Jagaran.  In 2000 JMC open the first radio station exclusively for Dalit in the town of Butwal. AP first visited Nepal to report on caste in 2004. See below for publications from the two organizations.

JMC's e-bulletin archive

JMC has been reporting from villages for two years, and its e-bulletin now goes out to almost 10,000 subscribers. These bulletins are written by Dalit reporters, and provide a direct first-hand account.

AP reports from the field

In 2004, AP’s Executive Director Iain Guest visited Nepal and reported on several of the practices that will be exposed and confronted in this project.

AdvocacyNet News Bulletins for JMC

AP has disseminated more than 10 AdvocacyNet bulletins on behalf of issues supported by the JMC since October 2005.

AP Blogs

Since 2006, AP has sent six Peace Fellows to volunteer at the JMC in Nepal. All wrote blogs.
