A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Josanna Lewin and Vital Voices – Ghana

Monterey Institute of International Studies

Josanna Lewin will serve as a Peace Fellow in Accra, Ghana working with Vital Voices’s Business Women’s Network hub, the Eagle Women Empowerment Club (EWEC).  She will focus on providing a forum for peer learning, information exchange, business development, access to education, resources and tools, and building networks for businesswomen in the region.

Born and raised in Hawaii, Josanna is currently pursing her Master in Public Administration with a concentration in women’s economic development and Latin American studies from the Monterey Institute of International Studies’ Graduate School of International Policy and Management.

Josanna received her BA in Political Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2004.  Upon graduation, she spent a year living and working abroad as an English teacher at the Universidad Central de Ecuador in Quito, Ecuador and various locations in Rome, Italy.  Her passion and interest in working with the developing world was first piqued when Josanna lived and studied in Costa Rica for 6 months with American Field Service (AFS) in 1998. Josanna’s fluency in Spanish allowed her to become a Sexual Health Educator with the Marin Aids Project (MAP) for at risk Latino youth as well as volunteer in a number of capacities throughout her extensive travels in Latin and South America.

Prior to beginning her graduate studies in the Fall of 2009, Josanna spent three years working in San Francisco in the business development field.   She has worked on several major fundraising events with Bay Area Hospital Foundations and in 2008 was a founding member of The Associates, a network of young professionals promoting awareness of and funding for vital services to the San Francisco community.

Josanna is excited to continue her commitment towards enhancing the position of women in the global economic structure with Vital Voices and EWEC in Accra, Ghana.
