Isha Mehmood and South-Asia Partnership (IANSA)
School of Public Affairs at American University
Isha Mehmood joins The Advocacy Project from American University’s School of Public Affairs, where she is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in justice, law and society. In 2007, she graduated magna cum laude with a BA in communication and a BS in sociology from Virginia Tech, with a minor in Africana Studies.
This summer, Isha will be working with the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) in Kathmandu, Nepal. The IANSA is a global network of around 800 civil society organizations working to stop the proliferation and misuse of small arms and light weapons. Since its formation in 1998, the IANSA has aided the United Nations Small Arms Program of Action, helped found the joint Control Arms Campaign with Oxfam and Amnesty International, and has been heavily involved in pushing for a global arms trade treaty.
Isha is eager to work with the IANSA, merging this experience with others that she has had for a more comprehensive idea of international human rights in post-conflict regions. While spending time in Cambodia during a study abroad program, Isha was exposed to the type of rebuilding that occurs after a massive civil war and genocide. It was there she spoke with children who lost limbs in landmine explosions at a museum orphanage; inspired, she became interested in conflict studies and human rights law.
Since visiting Southeast Asia, Isha has committed herself to promoting civil and human rights. She currently interns at the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. This past winter, she participated in an alternative break program focused on ending human rights violations in Guatemala; while there, she worked side by side with ex-guerilla members at a fair trade coffee farm.
Isha strongly believes that storytelling is the most powerful tool for social change. She is looking forward to using new media, photography, and video to help share the story of armed conflict in Nepal.
