Help Free Badja (Slaves) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Every year, the World Peasants/Indigenous Foundation (WPIO) travels to North and South Kivu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to negotiate with traditional leaders who still participate in the slave trade. WPIO's goal is to free as many badja (slaves) as possible. The campaign has, since 2004, helped free 36 families.
The WPIO campaign will last for three months this year and began on February 19. Three WPIO staff members will work in the Ishungu, Bugarura, Punia, Katana and Bunyakiri areas of Eastern Congo. They will support teams of local volunteers, who will lobby slave-owners to free their slaves and join the campaign.
For more information, visit the WPIO partner page and AP's new bulletin titled "Advocates Draw on Communities to Free Enslaved Pygmies in Eastern Congo."
It costs $20 a week to support a WPIO staff-member. $720 will cover staffing costs for the entire campaign.
Please give generously to this important campaign! (To give an amount other than $20, type in the amount you wish to give and press donate.)
Thank you!!
