Ola Duru and eHomemakers
Ola Duru will be working with AP’s partner eHomemakers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as a 2008 peace fellow. In her position this summer she will work to devise creative problem-solving for a grassroots economic empowerment project. She will also guide and train local staff to stabilize the operation, management and marketing implementation to pave way for Fair Trade marketing; practical training in proposal writing.
The primary aim of the eHomemakers network is to provide women with business skills and technical training that will help them become economically independent. It uses networking via the Internet to supply disadvantaged women, such as single mothers and disabled women, with an e-platform for self-help and assistance. The organization strives to integrate the principles of sustainable development into its programs to contribute to the Millennium Development Goals at the national level, and also seeks to improve the lives of homemakers through training, e-businesses and news.
Prior to Business school, Ola received her Bachelor’s degree in international marketing from American University. Upon graduation, she worked at the Carlyle Group as a fund coordinator in the International Real Estate group. In that position, Ola collaborated with both Asia and Europe real estate teams in investor management and accounting. She recently finished her first year in the MBA program at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business. Ola plans to focus on international development after graduation from the program.
As she heads of to Malaysia in June, Ola looks forward to taking the lead in helping eHomemakers reorganize, stabilize and grow their innovative social entrepreneurship program, Salaam Wanita. She also plans to conduct extensive outreach on a global scale on behalf of eHomemakers and Salaam Wanita, with the goal of finding a sustainable market for eco-baskets.
