A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change.

We are currently recruiting graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"I look at myself as having the potential to be as strong and caring as the amazing women I met in Kenya."

Kate Cummings (Tufts University) volunteered in 2009 as a Peace Fellow for Vital Voices in Africa.

Shweta Dewan and BOSFAM

Shweta Dewan is currently a graduate student at Columbia University pursuing a dual-degree in international affairs and public health, where her focus is in economic/political development and forced migration. This summer, she will be working with Bosnian Family (BOSFAM), an Advocacy Project partner organization.

Shweta was born and brought up in Zambia, which has greatly influenced her outlook on development and her understanding of society. After completing her BA in government from the University of Texas at Austin, Shweta returned home to work with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. It was there that her interest in refugees, trafficking and forced migration was aroused. Her most enlightening project during this time was interviewing refugees and their children for resettlement purposes.

She became particularly interested in children and tailored her future experiences keeping this in mind. She went on to work with the USAID-funded American Institutes for Research, where she gained practical experience implementing microfinance projects aimed at widows and young school girls. Before coming back to the United States to begin her master’s degree, Shweta worked with the United Nations Children’s Fund in Zambia and learned more about child trafficking issues and child protection, in which she hopes to gain further experience.

As an AP Peace Fellow, Shweta hopes to learn more about microfinance and income generation activities as she feels that this is a very sustainable avenue for development and economic stability. She believes that in assisting women, the welfare of children and entire societies are improved.  Shweta is extremely excited to have this opportunity and is eager to be a part of BOSFAM and its efforts to provide sustainability, security and strength to the many families in Tuzla who need it.
