Blind students get surgery, chance to see better

Photo Credit: Danita TopcagicDhaka, Bangladesh: Three blind Bangladeshi children recently underwent cataract surgery to improve their vision, thanks to the work of Advocacy Project Peace Fellow Danita Topcagic and the Blind Education and Rehabilitation Development Organization (BERDO).

Ms Topcagic, who is volunteering with BERDO this summer, noticed there were no medical records for the students attending BERDO’s school, and arranged for all of them to get free eye exams at the National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO) in Dhaka.

Three children were identified as candidates for the surgery, which the institute performed for free. The surgeries could improve the children’s vision by up to 20 percent. BERDO, a partner of The Advocacy Project, aims to empower people with disabilities through income generation, education and training.

FIND A PARTNER

The Advocacy Project develops partnerships with advocates on the frontline and with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In so doing, we take our cue from partners and tailor any support to their needs.
