Shubha Bala and the Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP)
Shubha Bala is currently studying for a Masters in International Affairs at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs where she is focusing on economic and political development, and media. She has a specific interest in South Asia, and the role of information in alleviating tensions in conflict and post-conflict areas. She also enjoys creative projects, and appreciates the beauty in sound and radio.
Shubha was born and brought up in Toronto, Canada, where she did her undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto in computer and electrical engineering. During her schooling she pursued her interest in international development, joining the executive team of the then young organization Engineers Without Borders. She also did a short placement in Gujarat, India, working with a local NGO in post-earthquake areas, when the 2002 Hindu-Muslim riots broke out. This created in her both a frustration and a desire to tackle cyclical violence due to ethnic conflict.
Upon graduating she chose to gain experience through a more typical engineering path by working as a business consultant in software firms. Three years in that sector convinced her of the strength of her original passion, which she then decided to combine with her analytical and problem-solving skills, adding to it an academic foundation.
She is extremely excited about being able to work with COCAP this summer in Baglung, Nepal, promoting human rights through radio.
