A Voice For the Voiceless

The Advocacy Project helps marginalized communities to tell their story, claim their rights and produce social change. We recruit graduate students to volunteer as Peace Fellows with partners.

The Impact of Service

"Speaking with locals and living in a country is the best way to learn about the real lives of citizens, not just the stories in the mainstream media. I will be more critical of what I read as a result of this experience. I also feel even more grateful for my education, and I feel a stronger responsibility to assist others who do not have resources or access to opportunities in their communities."

Maria Skouras (New York University) volunteered in 2011 as a Peace Fellow for eHomemakers in Malaysia.

Amanda Lasik and Blind Education and Rehabilitation Development Organization

Amanda Lasik is currently studying international development at the University of California San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies.  As part of the program, she participates in the Baja Project, a graduate student-managed organization that seeks to empower the residents of El Barril, Baja California, Mexico to improve health, education, infrastructure and quality of life.  Prior to attending graduate school, she received a bachelor’s degree in International Business from Northern Arizona University and served as an Americorps *VISTA member working on educational programs for immigrants in rural Washington State.  She has also volunteered in Central America and worked for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.  At the Society she managed legislative advocacy efforts related to health care and disability rights, wellness programs, and Spanish self-help groups.  Amanda brings her passions for disability advocacy and community development to the Advocacy Project.
