January 16, 2009, Washington, DC: The European Parliament passed a resolution January 15 calling on the European Union’s executive authorities to commemorate July 11 as a day of remembrance and mourning of the 1995 genocide in Srebrenica.
The resolution passed overwhelmingly, on a vote of 556 to 9. More than 8,000 men and boys over the age of 15 are estimated to have died during the Srebrenica massacre, which occurred after Bosnian Serb forces seized the town.
“It is evident that justice is the only closure for the victims of Bosnian genocide and ethnic cleansing,” said Elmina Kulasic, Executive Director of the Bosniak-American Advisory Council for Bosnia & Herzegovina.
The Council has worked with The Advocacy Project to promote the Srebrenica Memorial Quilt.
