Rebecca Chon is working with eHomemakers as a 2008 Peace Fellow. eHomemakers is an innovative grassroots organization based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

eHomemakers is a community network that promotes socio-economic empowerment and self-reliance through information and communication technology (ICT) to empower homemakers and homebound individuals, especially the disadvantaged. This is done through their e-community and pro-poor projects, where they promote home-based income generating projects, business partnerships, and entrepreneurship development. They also serve to disseminate clear and reliable information about safety and health, domestic issues, laws and more.

Rebecca is currently completing her MA in international educational development (policy studies) at Columbia University. She received her honors BA in political science in Canada where she has lived and worked. Her focus is on education and development policy. She is presently researching how ICT can be used as a tool that can empower individuals regardless of their educational background, socio-economic status, or geographic location. The effective use of ICT is about the strategic application and integration of technology which can aid in meeting the needs of a community. Key benefits for women include greater access to information and resources, achieving visibility, and cost savings. It is a mechanism that can give a voice to the people!

She will spend six months with eHomemakers helping them improve the lives of disadvantaged women in the community, where she will also assist with outreach initiatives to foster connections and engage others in collaborative efforts.

She is looking forward to working with eHomemakers, learning from this experience and being inspired by the commitment and drive of others.

FIND A PARTNER

The Advocacy Project develops partnerships with advocates on the frontline and with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In so doing, we take our cue from partners and tailor any support to their needs.
